The Buyer’s Guide

Everything a professional buyer needs to know about selecting, certifying, and investing in Colombian emeralds.

How to Assess an Emerald

Our gemmologist evaluates emeralds in the same way as diamonds — by colour, clarity, cut, and carat weight. Knowing what to look for reveals an emerald's sought-after inner glint.

Colour
The Most Important Factor
Emerald colour ranges from yellowy-green to bluish-green, but the primary hue is always green. Look for vividness rather than a specific tone — intensity of colour is what separates a fine stone from an ordinary one.
Carat
Size & Rarity
One carat equals 0.20 grams. The larger the emerald, the more its price per carat rises — because large stones with good colour and clarity are significantly rarer than small ones of equivalent quality.
Clarity
Inclusions & Character
Perfectly clear emeralds are exceptionally rare. Natural inclusions are accepted in all commercial grades. Look for stones where inclusions are barely noticeable — and never let minor clarity diminish a stone of outstanding colour.
Cut
The Skill of the Cutter
A skilled cutter knows how to coax the best from a rough emerald — concealing inclusions, maximising colour saturation, and revealing the gem's characteristic inner glimmer. Cut is what brings the stone to life.

The Three Mine Regions

Colombian origin carries a recognised premium in the global market. Where a stone comes from shapes its colour, character, and value.

Muzo
The benchmark. Intense, warm green — the defining colour of the finest Colombian emeralds. The most collectable and investment-grade stones typically originate here.
Chivor
A cooler, slightly bluish-green hue. Often cleaner than Muzo stones, highly sought after by collectors and designers who want a different character of green.
Coscuez
A major producing region with a wide range of qualities — well suited to commercial jewellery with strong value at multiple price points.
